Maps and directions: LOTR and The Simpsons

Discover a great activity

This activity is for a Spanish 101 group but is easily adaptable to other levels. The main idea is for students to learn how to give directions to get to a place using familiar settings.

Introduction (3 mins): For the activity, we need several teams according to the student’s preferences. We will show images of the two maps and discuss them a bit.
Step 1: Sheets with the maps will be distributed. Sheets with the characters from The Lord of the Rings and The Simpsons will also be distributed. This first part will consist of answering a series of questions that indicate where a series of places are located on the map. Each student must answer these questions separately.
Step 2: Then, as a team, they must share their answers and write instructions together to get from side A to side B. At the end, they must have 3 instructions that are as clear and precise as possible.
Step 3: The teams will pair up with another team, from a different topic. And they will share their map. One will read the instructions for the other team to move their piece within the map, to reach their destination.

Rationale: with this activity, the students are expected to practice vocabulary related to spaces and the names of buildings. It can also be used to practice the imperative voice in Spanish. Since students must follow instructions, they must make good use of the communication they may have within the classroom.
